Consular Legalization

For consular legalization, a document must go through a notary office, the Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation, the Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia, and the consulate of the country where it will be used. Consular legalization consists of certifying the signature on the document and the seal of the state authority. Typically, Russian documents are legalized in notarized copies, but there are exceptions. The timeframe for the consular legalization process depends on many factors; it's best to inquire about them at our translation bureau.

Apostille

The Hague Convention, which took place on October 5, 1961, simplified legalization in the participating countries of this convention. Russia joined the Hague Convention on May 31, 1992. Instead of the consular legalization procedure, the state authority in which the document was executed affixes a stamp - an apostille. An apostille certifies the authenticity of the signature, the capacity in which the person signing the document acted, and the authenticity of the seal and stamp with which it is certified. The timeframe for affixing an apostille should be clarified with the translation bureau staff in each case.

Not Subject to Legalization

— documents whose integrity has been compromised;

— documents with corrections, additions, erased letters or stains that make it difficult to read the document;

— documents with discrepancies in surname, first name, or patronymic data;

— laminated documents.

When Document Legalization is Required
