Interpretation — a tool for business communication
In the business world, knowledge of English is no longer surprising. However, few can boast of mastering it at a level sufficient to conduct business meetings with foreign partners.
This requires knowledge of highly specialized terminology, the ability to catch nuances of word meanings on the fly, skillfully parry opponents' arguments, and diplomatically navigate sensitive topics of conversation — which is difficult even in one's native language. Sometimes communication with foreign colleagues requires Chinese, Korean, or another language, knowledge of which is rare. For these reasons, to conduct a productive business meeting with foreigners, an interpreter is invited.
Below you will learn about the types of interpretation, discover in which situations they are used, and how an interpreter can influence the course of negotiations.
Which type of interpretation to choose
For events with a large number of participants — summits, negotiations, conferences, presentations, etc. — simultaneous interpretation is preferable, as it helps maintain the attention of a large audience. Speakers do not pause, and the interpreter's speech sounds simultaneously with the speakers' speech. Simultaneous interpretation requires special equipment that can be rented, or the meeting can be held in an already equipped conference hall. The pace of work is intense, so two or three interpreters are invited to the event.
The name of the simultaneous interpretation subtype 'chuchotage' means 'whispering' in French. Chuchotage is conducted for one or two people and does not require special equipment.
Chuchotage is used when:
— negotiations take place face-to-face;
— only one person at the event does not speak its language;
— when it is impossible to install equipment for simultaneous interpretation, for example, in an outdoor setting.
For events with a small number of participants — presentations, briefings, seminars, receptions, negotiations (including telephone) etc. — consecutive interpretation is often chosen. Speakers pause, during which the interpreter's speech is heard. The event lasts longer, but speakers have time to think through their remarks and communication situations.
When else interpretation is useful
Business relations with foreign partners are not the only situation where interpretation is required.
An interpreter will help:
— On a city tour, when visiting a theater or museum with foreign guests;
— During installation and setup of foreign equipment by a foreign specialist for Russian companies;
— During notarial actions with foreign citizens (marriage, execution of wills, powers of attorney);
— During court proceedings with foreign citizens;
— When you need to quickly understand the meaning of documents and detailed written translation is not required.
The secret of an interpreter's mastery
An interpreter's mastery plays an important role in the success of negotiations. But to conduct a business meeting, fluency in the language is not enough: an interpreter must know how to put people at ease. To do this, one should:
— Be friendly. An interpreter should radiate calm and friendliness, as they work for people. Helping people from different countries understand each other is the interpreter's mission, love for people is part of the profession;
— Be tactful. In conflict situations, when the meeting does not go according to plan and discussion participants are no longer restrained in their expressions, the interpreter remains cool-headed, softens overly harsh phrases in translation, helps opponents calm down by example and direct the conversation in the right direction;
— Make a pleasant impression. The interpreter's neat appearance, modest but situation-appropriate clothing, pleasant manners, calm speech and clear diction create a positive atmosphere for conversation;
— Be punctual. People do not like to wait, even if they themselves are constantly late. The degree of tension increases with every minute the interpreter is delayed, so a representative of this profession must be as precise as a Swiss watch.

How to order interpretation
Before an event, the interpreter researches the topic in advance, as there will be no time for reflection during interpretation. People prepare for negotiations for weeks, and the interpreter also needs time to immerse themselves in the topic and study the details of the upcoming event. For simultaneous interpretation, it is desirable to provide written materials on the topic as well. Inform about the event at least two to three days before the start, and preferably a week in advance: the earlier you place an order, the more successful the meeting will be.
The cost of interpretation varies depending on the level of the event, complexity of the topic, number of listeners and type of interpretation. To get accurate information, contact 'Polyglot Translation Bureau' and we will calculate the cost of the event for you.
